In November 2024, C40 Cities produced an implementation guide advising how cities can restrict carbon-intensive advertising, which recommends drafting: “a clear and comprehensive high-carbon advertising policy for municipally owned advertising space.” This is not a policy to deal with misleading claims and social responsibility in advertising related to the environment, rather as the guide says: “Policy documentation should clearly explain how the high-carbon advertising ban aligns with the city’s objectives, what it covers and why, to reduce any ambiguity when it comes into force.
