London's Missions
At its meeting on 9 September 2024, the London Partnership Board endorsed proposals to establish London's missions. Rather than starting from scratch, the missions evolve the successful partnership working already in place, including the progress made by the London Recovery Board established in the COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time, they promote the principles of innovation, big-picture thinking, creativity and continuous learning. Together, we can tackle London’s unique challenges and unlock its vast opportunities.
London is one of the world’s great cities. Home to nine million people, it’s a place that combines diversity and rich history with dynamic innovation.
There are people and organisations working tirelessly across our city to improve the lives of Londoners every day. London’s Missions are not separate from this vital work already happening. Instead, they provide a powerful framework to unite partners and communities to radically improve the lives of Londoners.
What London’s Missions do
Missions-based working focuses on a small number of bold, measurable goals that require genuine collaboration across government, businesses and communities. They encourage creative ideas, innovative methods, and longer-term thinking to transform our existing ways of working and deliver real change. The missions represent the London way of doing things, where everyone has a voice in shaping the city’s future.
The London way of doing things means:
- Building bigger, stronger partnerships to deliver change together.
- Continuous learning with people empowered to test new ideas and learn from what’s gone before.
- Focusing on bold, measurable goals that will deliver real change for Londoners.
- Big picture thinking that takes a whole-system view of our city.
- Telling the story as we go and sharing what we learn.
How London's Missions work
London's Missions have established Mission Boards to provide strategic oversight. Chaired by the GLA, London Councils and other key institutions, Boards bring together senior partners from across the London system. Feeding into these boards, there are multi-organisational delivery groups and mission teams, taking the work forward, prioritising the principles of collaboration, innovation and continuous learning to deliver tangible change for Londoners.
The Missions
London’s Housing Mission aims to meet London's housing need by rapidly accelerating the delivery of new homes.
London’s Energy Mission aims to spark an unstoppable shift in how London’s buildings are heated and cooled, making clean, resilient, affordable heating and cooling the new norm by 2035.
