According to taxi drivers’ representative bodies, a major factor behind the decline in the number of licensed black cabs is the high cost of new vehicles, with only one model approved for use in London. At the Plenary Assembly meeting in September 2024, the Mayor blamed “market forces” for this limited choice, rather than the market distortion caused by TfL’s insistence on a 25ft turning circle requirement. Other models are available for use in other cities but this requirement means they are non-compliant in London.
