Bus Driver Fatigue: Criteria for Determining Bus Drivers' Stand/Recovery Time at termini where TfL fails to provide a Bus Drivers' Toilet

  • Reference: 2024/2876
  • Question by: Keith Prince
  • Meeting date: 12 September 2024
In your response to Mayoral Question 2024/2214, you stated, "Transport for London works with the bus operators to review bus schedules to ensure that adequate stand time is incorporated in all bus schedules". Please will you provide me with the criteria, code of practice or agreed timings applied to bus schedules for ensuring that "adequate stand time" is provided to bus drivers at termini on the 25 percent of London bus routes where TfL fails to provide bus drivers with access to a toilet?

Toilet Dignity: TfL's Bus Staff Appreciation Campaign

  • Reference: 2024/2874
  • Question by: Keith Prince
  • Meeting date: 12 September 2024
Since your responses to (a) Mayoral Question 2022/0787 confirmed that one quarter of London’s bus routes don't provide a toilet for bus drivers at one terminus and (b) Mayoral Question 2023/2120 confirmed that TfL had no intention of installing any toilets on these bus routes, does TfL's recent announcement of the second phase of its "Bus Staff Appreciation Campaign" imply that you'll be providing them with toilets facilities on these routes?

I have seen internal communication from one of TfL's largest bus contractors which stated, "certain criteria must be met for TfL to cover these [toilet] breaks." Please will you provide me with a copy of this criteria?

Bus Driver Toilet Breaks (1)

  • Reference: 2024/2872
  • Question by: Keith Prince
  • Meeting date: 12 September 2024
I have seen recent internal communication from one of TfL's largest bus contractors which stated, "All mileage lost due to toilet breaks is deductible, which adversely affects the business and overall performance". Is this true? If so, do you agree with me that financially penalising bus operators for allowing their bus drivers time to use a toilet during working hours is neither safe nor humane?
