Migrant Advice and Support Fund

I welcome the new Migrant Advice and Support Fund which will provide funding to frontline groups and organisations providing specialist advice and support to migrant Londoners. When will we know the details of who has been successful in obtaining this funding, including details of the projects? Can this be broken down by London borough?

Trade union membership

The Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy’s Trade Union Membership, UK 1995-2021: Statistical Bulletin found that Inner London had the lowest proportion of workers affiliated to a trade union with Outer London not far behind. Inner London had the lowest rate of employees with a trade union presence in the workplace. Given the economic downturn, how will you be promoting the benefits of trade union membership to London’s employees?

Low-pay employment

The Office for National Statistics analysis of job quality found that 13% of employees in the UK were in low-pay employment, and that low-pay employment was most likely among London employees, those who were disabled, younger, or had lower levels of educational attainment. How will you redouble your efforts to address low pay in the continuing economic downturn in 2023?

Unpaid overtime

London employees who work in highly paid occupations, and employees aged 35 to 54 years are most likely to report working unpaid overtime. How can you work with London’s employers to put an end to unpaid overtime?

In 2010, the Child Poverty Act was passed with cross-party support and imposed a legal duty on governments to produce a child poverty strategy. This was abolished in 2016 by the Welfare Reform and Work Act. Following the new units to address child poverty as seen in Ireland, Scotland and New Zealand, will you write to the Prime Minister to bring back a child poverty strategy which would apply to London?

Taoiseach ‪ Leo Varadkar has said that he will establish a new unit to work across government to address child poverty, following the experience of Scotland and New Zealand where similar units have had a significant impact. Is this something that you could look into establishing in London in the absence of a focus from the Government?
