Could the improved public open space not be designed in such a way that healthy trees could be retained? Tree removal should be a last resort. Why was there no other option in this case? Growing new trees will take years, potentially decades, to bring back trees to a similar size. Evidence provided by TfL to the London Assembly’s Environment Committee recently confirmed that in 2024/2025 we lost in total 148 trees in London. This is the result of only a small number of trees being planted and a far larger number of trees being removed. We also see a large number of trees being replaced, however, it takes years, even decades for the new trees to grow to a decent size and provide the same benefits provided by the previous trees.
