Budget and Financial Issues (Supplementary) [1]

  • Question by: Andrew Pelling
  • Meeting date: 13 September 2000
I felt very relaxed at the party when I understood that we were not paying for any of it, and that is what I read in the media as well. How much money was spent by the functional bodies in addition to our money?

What about residents, or the local authority?

Apart from myself, Ken, how many of the people on this review group would you say had close connections with the local community there?

  • Question by: Graham Tope
  • Meeting date: 13 September 2000
The one place where Assembly Members have not been able to read about the carnival or the review is in the Mayor's report to us - either the written report or his supplementary comments at the beginning. I wonder why that is. Secondly, would he take this opportunity, for the record, to tell the Assembly who the members of the review group are, what its terms of reference are, and when it is expected to report?

I am talking about Notting Hill carnival and what lessons we can learn for the Mayor's party and other events.

  • Question by: Toby Harris
  • Meeting date: 13 September 2000
I am very interested in the result of the review. Can you ensure that it considers stewards, first aid facilities, loo facilities - we had a big problem at the Millennium party - rubbish collection and the event's sustainability? Can you ensure that that will be considered in your review?

Notting Hill carnival (Supplementary) [4]

  • Question by: Roger Evans
  • Meeting date: 13 September 2000
In your reply to the earlier question from Sally Hamwee, you said that the projected costs for policing your New Year party had come down somewhat in negotiations. Can you tell what they have come down to, and how many police officers can be employed for that sum?

  • Question by: Trevor Phillips
  • Meeting date: 13 September 2000
The contact did not extend to him telling me that he was going to be chair of the review. [Interruption.] I am being told off for taking too much time. I am simply saying, "Let's not do it this way again.'

Bafflingly, you and I are completely at one on the matter of carnival - which is disturbing for both of us. But the question I am asking is based on your column on Tuesday morning, which said that the review would be chaired by Lee Jasper. You say so in your own words. That column, presumably, would have been written on Monday afternoon - prior to any notification that that was even in the offing. We understood that on Tuesday morning, from reading The Independent. I am just asking whether this is the way in which we can expect things...

I do not want to make too big an issue of this, but that is not right. You issued a statement on Monday saying that there would be a review. On Tuesday morning, I picked up my Independent to find that it named the Chair of the review. That must have happened before your meetings with other people. I just want to ask, on behalf of the Assembly more than anything else: are we going to have to read important announcements - which this is - in The Independent instead of by more conventional means?
