Asylum Seekers (Supplementary) [3]

  • Question by: Jenny Jones
  • Meeting date: 12 December 2001
You may not have these figures, but do you know how many failed asylum seekers are being detained on a weekly basis at the moment? Has it increased beyond the ten that was the average until recently?

Asylum Seekers (Supplementary) [2]

  • Question by: Jenny Jones
  • Meeting date: 12 December 2001
I'm just wondering if these new proposed reforms regarding asylum seekers are actually going to have much of an impact. There is talk now of different holding facilities and that could have an impact on whether or not we actually need the centralised, exclusive facility that's been discussed.

  • Question by: Trevor Phillips
  • Meeting date: 12 December 2001
You referred to it in passing Toby, but I wonder if you could say a little bit more about the current situation and the practice of referring failed asylum seekers to the nearest police station, about the costs of that, or disadvantages of that, to the MPS.

Wembley Stadium (Supplementary) [4]

  • Question by: Louise Bloom
  • Meeting date: 23 May 2001
Are the FA committed to London or Birmingham?

Wembley Stadium (Supplementary) [3]

Thank you for that. While I very much welcome the meeting that was held yesterday, I am somewhat perturbed to recall that Graham Tope asked you what was happening about this project back in November, and the first time we had reports of a meeting was yesterday. It seems that there is a real danger that this is going to fall through a massive crack somewhere, and that London will lose the prospect of having this stadium because of the problems among the Government, the FA and various others involved in the project. Can you assure us that, from now...

Wembley Stadium (Supplementary) [2]

  • Question by: Andrew Pelling
  • Meeting date: 23 May 2001
If Picketts Lock does get into trouble, do you think that Crystal Palace - now thankfully freed from the recent awful proposals - could be a useful alternative reserve for the 2005 championships?

Wembley Stadium (Supplementary) [1]

  • Question by: Jennette Arnold OBE
  • Meeting date: 23 May 2001
I will take your answer to Louise as the answer to my question, which demonstrates cross-party support on and commitment to this issue. I certainly agree with Louise that there are concerns, certainly among Members of the Cultural Strategy Group, that the issue has not been high on your agenda. We appreciate that you have had other things to do, but will you confirm what you said to me in a recent conversation - that, as soon as you get more time, in a couple of months - you will be spending more time on issues like Wembley stadium and...

London Speed Camera Partnership Bid (Supplementary) [3]

  • Question by: Len Duvall OBE
  • Meeting date: 12 December 2001
Chair, I am not sure if this one of the reversals that I mentioned earlier on but I am not a member of the MPA so I will go with this question. Can you give us an assurance that the MPA will not sacrifice long-term key policy developments under short-term decisions taken by the MPS in their budget making, as in civilianisation of the police force which is quite key in terms of freeing up resources, and any others that may come into being or have already been taken?

London Speed Camera Partnership Bid (Supplementary) [2]

  • Question by: Jenny Jones
  • Meeting date: 12 December 2001
I think part of the problem with the whole issue of road safety is that it is simply not understood how important this issue is if you compare the number of people killed on the roads to the number of people murdered and also the number of people seriously injured on the roads. Is there any way, do you think, that we could increase public knowledge and also police understanding of how important this issue is?

  • Question by: Jenny Jones
  • Meeting date: 12 December 2001
You know that I am always singing the praise of the Havering Road Safety Unit which is two very dedicated officers. Have you had a chance to actually explore the sort of work that they are doing, the results they are getting on an incredibly small budget?
