Obviously there are proposals flying around the place, nobody quite knows yet whether they will happen or not, but some of the debate at Committee stage on the amendments may well invite evidence provided by witnesses. Is that something you would be pushing for, for witnesses to appear?

Thank you, Mayor. I think it is the view of the Labour Councillors in Lambeth and Southwark that although the wardens did make a good contribution in their time because they preceded the Safer Neighbourhood Teams, the time has come to upgrade the warden schemes into PCSOs. Do you agree it would be more cost effective to have PCSOs who are integrated into Safer Neighbourhood Teams so that there is not a separate office bureaucracy set up for wardens, and that that would be more effective than having disconnected wardens?

I agree we want to see better services for people in areas suffering from anti-social behaviour. One point I would want to make about the value of some of the wardens, not all of the schemes have been very successful, is that in some instances they provide a very particular need. For example, in Streatham we have some Somalian wardens who have been very helpful in dealing with quite a stressed, deprived and troubled community. They have done a terrific job. Would you agree it would be good if the Metropolitan Police Service could find a way of upgrading, retraining...

Yet it was a scheme which was defended by Sir Ian Blair, and a number of other people, when I brought it to their attention that Sir Robin Wales had his private parks police dressed up in uniform which mimic the Metropolitan Police Service, which were using Metropolitan Police Service forms, which were stopping people in the streets in other boroughs and outside Tescos. When that evidence was presented to senior members of the Metropolitan Police Service it was virtually ignored as if Sir Robin Wales - who I believe was then Chair of the Association of Government - was...
