Legacy (Supplementary) [6]

  • Question by: John Biggs
  • Meeting date: 25 April 2007
Right. Another example would be the white water canoeing facility where, again, to have a national venue which can be used for international competitions every now and again is a very real and obvious aspiration for the national body, but to have a facility that at the same time can train people up to become tomorrow's Olympic athletes is sometimes going to be in conflict with that. I do not want specific answers about specific venues, but how are you going to make sure and be able to demonstrate to us that you have balanced those in a way that...

I have had some involvement in this issue, and life is never quite as straightforward as it might seem. I think we should note that the cyclists, quite rightly, in a consultation, rejected an option for relocation to Enfield which, although it was very strongly opposed by them for a range of good reasons, did have a fundamentally different configuration from the arrangements we now have in front of us. I think it is also interesting that in a press release that came out today the British Cycling Chief Executive says, `The Olympic Velopark will be a huge boost to...

When I was in the negotiations with the LDA it was never, ever suggested that the track that the Eastway Users' Group would go back to would be on two sides of a main road. I can assure you. I was there. It was never even suggested.

I still find it extraordinary that your idea of producing facilities that are at least as good includes a facility of a road racing track that is both sides of a main road. That is just ludicrous.

What about the International Broadcast Centre and the Media and Press Centre? You are going to build a huge facility there. What happens when the circus has moved on, what are you going to do with it?

  • Question by: Mike Tuffrey
  • Meeting date: 14 March 2007
Can I just deal with the John Hutton point. It is indeed welcome. What is not welcome is it took a question from me, after the Mayor had announced the scheme, for anybody in your office to wake up to the fact there was an issue here that needed to be checked out.

Of course there are good things happening, but it is not as a result of a planned activity.

Simon [Fletcher] a moment ago helpfully said that he was not claiming the credit on behalf of the Mayor for everything that is going on.

Is not the truth here that in the second term the Mayor and his senior staff have got the travel bug? If it was not for questions from us none of this retrofitted justification would be coming out. Is it not also the truth that you are neglecting things that matter to London like putting India after Venezuela and spending time in Cuba? Is it not time that the Mayor got back to sticking up for London and putting his time and effort in things that matter to London?
