In plane sight – noise and light pollution in London

Created on
06 February 2023

What action has Heathrow Airport taken to resolve residents' complaints about noise and what is the Mayor of London doing about it?

Plans for a third runway at Heathrow Airport would create additional flight paths, meaning that more people will be affected by noise than if the airport stayed at two runways.

Noise and light pollution pose a significant threat to Londoners’ health. Aircraft noise can affect residents’ well-being and quality of life and is associated with sleep disturbance, cardiovascular disease and cognitive impairment in children.

In the second of a two-part meeting, the London Assembly Environment Committee will meet tomorrow to discuss the impact of noise and light pollution on Londoners and what the Mayor can do to help.

It will look at how Heathrow plans to mitigate the noise impacts arising from expansion, how it has worked with London City Airport to mitigate noise, and the impact of light pollution on wildlife, biodiversity and human well-being and health in London.

Panel 1 – Aviation and noise pollution:

  • Becky Coffin, Director of Communities and Sustainability, Heathrow Airport
  • Rick Norman, Head of Noise Strategy, Heathrow Airport

Panel 2 – Sources and impacts of light pollution in London:

  • Elliot Kemp, Policy Team Leader – Design, Heritage & Environment, GLA
