Welcome to the new Talk London

Added by Talk London

After a few surveys, several rounds of user testing and a discussion with some sneak peeks of our new designs, we’re very happy to welcome you to the new Talk London!

The platform is still in beta version, which means that it is not the final version and more edits and updates will follow.

Our old platform last got a make-over in 2017 and the technology it was running on needed a full upgrade. We used the opportunity to make improvements based on your feedback.

What’s new?

  • A fresh design, but we kept our familiar pink colour as so many of you told us you liked that.

  • Big consultations are now gathered on an ‘issue page’, where you can read more about the background, see the different stages in the timeline and find all the related surveys and discussions together. This was a new feature a lot of you were keen to see.  The page you’re on now is an issue page, and going forward this is how we’ll present our work.

  • Lots of you told us you don’t always comment on our discussions, so we’ve created new and easy ways to have your say. To show your support for another member’s comment or idea, you can now click the little arrow to ‘upvote’ it or click the heart icon to show you care.

As always, your feedback is very welcome! It will help us improve Talk London over the next few months, as we continue to shape our new platform.

What do you think of our new online community platform? What features are you most looking forward to use?

Tell us in the discussion below.

There must be a way by a points system where people can come to live in London.
In my area Barnet they are building flats everywhere. Money worshipers!
We will soon be like Mexico City and with automation what are we going to do with the 37 million people in 2030 who have no jobs because of automation?
Some automation is fine but if it displaces people and causes problems in communities then serious care should be taken regarding automation and technology.

Why must the intro be shown in full on the 'next' pages? Lots of sites have most of the text hidden and displayable via a read more button. Also there are too few comments per page - again most sites let you choose how many to display. Having to click many many times is off-putting and I tend to give up rather than read other people's comments. I like the pink by the way

I look forward to seeing what comes of this website.
I hope it helps with great change for London environmentally, more clubs and activities/trips for the youth so they don’t get into the wrong crowd on the streets, more career opportunities and training, free gym for the lower class, more opportunities of exercising for the community, school changes, more advice on homeschooling and systems in place, a friendlier city, more opportunities for youth; including better access to long term therapy and not just short term term therapy that currently only runs on the NHS (CAMHS) and other great change, including promoting healthier lifestyles like vegetarian eating, exercise, mindfulness and more.

I have had in the past trouble logging in but hopefully it will be better now. It is good to have a say in how our community goes forward.

In the voted section, you can see all the things that are being voted, the status of the idea and when this project will start and finish.
To vote is the things that need to be a vote and comment.
Requeest. ideas that individuals want to include and people also can comment and this could go to the status of To vote.
Collaborate section will be an option where people will confirm they want to collaborate as a volunteer, service provider or sponsorship.
In progress. All the request voted and approved and are ready to go and information on how this is going to be done.

I can't see a search box in order to search for keywords or discussion topics

This is compounded by the fact that when I logged in about 10 or 15 minutes ago, the system was running very, very slowly (it's picked up speed since). I don't know how common this performance problem is.

The issue I have is closing down the discussion, what is the point of having a discussion board if the discussions are not active - I understand you have to have a cut-off point due to timelines for policy design and feeding but why not say that any discussion after that date will not be able to pay into the current policy design and would have to be rolled over into the next one unless something shouts out as not being covered before the policy is finalised and printed.

Is it NOT quite obvious that the choice of horrid bright pink is far from an inoffensive, calming, off-putting colour Talk London might have selected. Surely a softer green, blue or different and less in-yer-face earth-red from a spectrum of neutral tones would be more appropriate? The 'hot pink' used by Talk London says to me "Brash, Nasty - and I've got a headache please pass the paracetamols because this Talk London makes me nauseous''.

I agree with the contributor who said that the password is far too complicated for a service like this. If I understand correctly the purpose is to get feedback from citizens, which will normally be published in the public domain. So an ultra secure 12 letter password is way OTT and will discourage contributions.

The new layout is clear, clean and easy to use. Like other users have said, I think it would be good if comments could be sorted by “most upvoted” or “most liked”, notably so that I don’t need to go through the entire thread to find out what ideas I agree with most. This would be useful so I can simply upvote a comment instead of repeating the same ideas.

Furthermore, the number of comments visible per page is too low (I think it’s about 4 at the moment?). It would be great to be able to see 10, 50 or 100 comments at once. Also, maybe the bubbles could be redesigned so that the margins/space around the comment itself is smaller — just to make it more compact and easy to scroll through rapidly.

The new password requirements are too secure. It took me over 10 minutes to find one that fulfilled the criteria, during which time I discovered that swear words are not accepted within the password field.

Thanks everyone for your comments on the new Talk London. We’re really pleased you’re liking it so far.

Some of you have asked about the order of the comments in discussions. They currently appear in chronological order, with the newest posts at the top. When you click the upvote arrow, it doesn’t move the comment up the discussion thread, but it shows members are supporting that particular comment.

Does this work for you? What changes would you like to see?

As always, your feedback is very helpful and will help us shape the platform further over the coming months.

Thank you,
Talk London

I would prefer having both upvote and downvote, and each comment would display both totals (not a single sum). That would show to readers what others think. That is used on other sites that I use and works very well (for me).

I really like the new look and I think the timeline is a great idea. Overall the site is much clearer and more accessible. However there are two things I've noticed. As EastLondoner pointed out, there doesn't seem to be any way of sorting comments, they seem to be shown in chronological order. If that is the case, I'm not sure how up-voting will work. The second issue is that the last comment on a page repeats as the first comment on the following page. I don't know if this is deliberate or a glitch. If it is deliberate, I would prefer it removed. It takes up unnecessary space, especially with long comments and makes navigating through them less convenient. It also means that you reread at least the first line or two of those comments that fall at the end of a page and reappear on the next.
I would hope that all members' comments are treated equally, regardless of their age. While I agree that the opinions of young people are important, especially regarding long-term decisions where they should possibly be given higher priority, that shouldn't generally be the case. Such a course of action would present a lot of difficulties. For one thing, there isn't any realistic way of checking a contributer's age and I can foresee situations where people would pretend to be younger than they are if that meant their comment were given greater weight. We are all Londoners, whatever our age, and the issues affecting London affect us all equally (more or less, but I assume people will tend to comment on issues that do affect them and not on those that don't), so our voices should carry equal weight too.

I like the layout. But it would be good to have more sorting options and to make the threads searchable.

This is great for keeping up with London matters. I hope that lots of young people will make use of this very accessible info site. Even better, let’s have their views on important community matters

The new site looks fancy but does not offer much, just like the politicians in charge.

In the prior version, it was possible to sort comments in a discussion, e.g. from the most recent. I can't see a way to do that in the new version, it's unclear how they are sorted by default.

I agree with you regarding the sorting, ie there does not appear to be a way of doing that. I daresay it'll be added before the full release. A platform with less functionality than the one it's replacing is a bit pointless.
