The housing charity, Shelter, has today released its report on the future of social housing in the UK.

In response, the Chair of the London Assembly Housing Committee, Sian Berry AM said:

“Over the past five years the amount of social housing available in London has changed little, despite rising demand. The Mayor is now channelling money in this direction, but not enough homes in London are available for social rent.

“The Shelter report recommends a voice for tenants at a regional level, not just a national level and this was one of our recommendations in the Hearing Resident Voices report. During our investigation, social housing landlords told us that resident engagement is crucial in shaping services and that residents should be involved as far as it is possible in everything that affects their lives.

“This is one of the reasons why we believe a London Social Housing Commissioner is the best way to ensure that residents voices are heard.”
