Protecting vulnerable Londoners from fire

Created on

Over the last five years, 65 per cent of fatalities from fire were over 65 years of age [1].

Older people are more at risk because they may not be able to respond to a fire as quickly and may not be able to escape in time.

One of the most significant risk factors that contribute to fire deaths is having conditions associated with older people, such as visual, cognitive, or physical impairments.

The London Assembly Fire, Resilience and Emergency Planning Committee will meet tomorrow to discuss outreach and engagement and whether there are communities the London Fire Brigade (LFB) is particularly concerned about. Other topics in the session include:

  • Culture review – update and progress
  • Mental health – staff sickness and LFB initiatives
  • LFB Performance – special service attendance, 999 calls and community safety

The guests are:

  • Andy Roe, London Fire Commissioner
  • Dr Fiona Twycross, Deputy Mayor for Fire and Resilience
  • Tim Powell, Director of People, LFB

The meeting will take place on Wednesday, 25 May 2022 from 10am, in the Chamber at City Hall, Kamal Chunchie Way, E16 1ZE.

Media and members of the public are invited to attend.

The meeting can also be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube.
