London’s night-time economy – can it recover?

City hall by night - London Plan
Created on
03 September 2021

The night-time economy in London fully re-opened on 19 July 2021, following 16 months of closures and social distancing measures during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns.

Parts of the night-time economy, particularly hospitality, are facing immediate staffing shortages due to pandemic-related redundancies and skills shortages. There is uncertainty about how surviving night-time economy businesses can return to and exceed pre-pandemic levels of business.

Also, Londoners are showing mixed levels of confidence in returning to night-time economy businesses.

On Monday, the Economy Committee will investigate how to increase footfall and custom in London at night-time and understand workforce challenges in the night-time economy.

The guests are:

  • Amy Lamé, Night Czar
  • Councillor Matthew Green, Cabinet Member for Business, Licensing and Planning, Westminster City Council
  • Michael Kill, CEO, Night-Time Industries Association
  • Rowena Howie, London Policy Representative, Federation of Small Businesses

The meeting will take place on Monday, 6 September 2021 from 10am, in the Chamber at City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).

Media and members of the public are invited to attend.

The meeting can also be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube
