Is the apprenticeship system working in London?

City of Westminster College
Created on
02 February 2022

Over the last five years, apprenticeship numbers have fallen in London – particularly for young people.

The estimated number of apprenticeship starts in London in 2020/21 was 14 per cent lower than in 2016/17. The fall has been particularly sharp for those aged 16-18, with the estimated number of starts in the capital declining by 50 per cent since 2016/17.

The apprenticeship levy, which is paid by employers to fund apprenticeship training, was introduced in 2017. What impact has this had on the apprenticeship system in London?

The London Assembly Economy Committee will meet tomorrow to examine the reasons behind the recent fall in the number of apprenticeship starts and whether a reform of the wider system is needed.

The guests are:

  • Anna Ambrose, Director, London Progression Collaboration
  • Stephen Evans, Chief Executive, Learning and Work Institute
  • Simon Ashworth, Director of Policy for the Association of Employment and Learning Providers (AELP) and Vice Chair of the Skills for Londoners Higher Level Skills Advisory Group
  • Jules Pipe CBE, Deputy Mayor for Planning, Regeneration and Skills
  • Michelle Cuomo-Boorer, Assistant Director of Skills and Employment, Greater London Authority

The meeting will take place on Thursday, 3 February from 10am, in Rooms G02 – G03 – G04, LFB Headquarters, 169 Union Street, London, SE1 0LL.

Media and members of the public are invited to attend.

The meeting can also be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube.
