MOPAC plan to deal with budget savings

  • Reference: 2015/0048
  • Question by: Jenny Jones
  • Meeting date: 21 January 2015
Your Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, Stephen Greenhalgh, told the London Assembly's Budget and Performance Committee on 6 January 2015 that when he arrived in post midway through 2012 there was "no plan to deliver the savings" to the Metropolitan Police Service budget. He also said "I started in 2012, I expected a Rolls Royce plan to deliver the savings we all knew were coming…there wasn't a plan, was there Craig?" Please confirm his statements were correct?

Cost of different waste treatment options - why wait to 2016 or beyond

  • Reference: 2015/0045
  • Question by: Jenny Jones
  • Meeting date: 21 January 2015
In answer to my question 2014/5035 you state that you don't intend to update the typical costs of different household waste treatment options (as set out in your 2011 Municipal Waste Management Strategy) until you revise your Waste Strategy in 2016 or thereafter. Given the huge potential savings of recycling over incineration, will you agree to update and publish this information as a stand-alone report?

Borough waste apportionment targets

  • Reference: 2015/0044
  • Question by: Jenny Jones
  • Meeting date: 21 January 2015
In answer to my question 2014/5031 you stated that you have set ambitious recycling targets for boroughs to meet. Will you provide your 2015 waste apportionment targets for each London borough, their existing treatment capacity and shortfalls? If possible, can you also break this down by waste treatment type?

Western Riverside Waste Authority boroughs - plunging recycling rates

  • Reference: 2015/0043
  • Question by: Jenny Jones
  • Meeting date: 21 January 2015
With reference to your answer to my question 2014/5033 you stated that the significant falls in recycling rates among the Western Riverside Waste Authority boroughs were down to "higher than normal contamination levels" at the material recycling facility at Smugglers Way and you were "satisfied this is a short term problem that once resolved will see the Riverside boroughs' recycling rates rise again". Clearly this is not a short term problem, and it is difficult to believe that a temporary contamination occurrence can account for the scale of the deterioration in household recycling rates. This is a problem that goes...

Mayor's 2015 recycling forecast

  • Reference: 2015/0042
  • Question by: Jenny Jones
  • Meeting date: 21 January 2015
In your answer to my question 2014/5032 you stated that you "still want London to reach my 45% recycling target in 2015/16". Given that this would require an increase in recycling rates of at least an unprecedented 10 per cent over the next year, what new waste treatment capacity do you expect to be delivered over this period? Please can you break this down by waste facility, its waste treatment capacity (tonnes), location and the type (ie MBT/AD, RDF, Thermal, MRF)?

Tax incentives for community energy projects fund

  • Reference: 2015/0041
  • Question by: Jenny Jones
  • Meeting date: 21 January 2015
Thank you for your answer to my question 2014/5036. However, the question in reference to your comment" my Senior Advisor for Energy and Environment has written to HM Treasury in support of continued tax incentives to help community energy projects fund their development phase" asked you to publish or make this letter available to the public. Will you provide this letter?

Shale Gas claims "misleading the public"

  • Reference: 2015/0040
  • Question by: Jenny Jones
  • Meeting date: 21 January 2015
According to the UK Energy Research Centre's (UKERC) recent report on the future of gas in the UK, Minister's claims of lower prices and greater energy security from UK shale gas were "hype", "lacking in evidence" and "misleading the public". Given your repeated advocacy of shale gas (and dismissal of environmental concerns) what is your response to these findings?

Climate change alarm bells

  • Reference: 2015/0039
  • Question by: Jenny Jones
  • Meeting date: 21 January 2015
According to the Met Office figures, 2014 was officially the warmest year in the Central England area (which covers London) since official records began over 350 years ago and marks a year punctuated by broken records. 2014 started with a record wet and stormy winter with the Thames Barrier closing an unprecedented 50 times. It then experienced its driest September and warmest Halloween on record. Are you concerned?
