While it is welcome that some London councils are accredited employers, there is of course the anomaly that their outsourced social care staff are rarely paid the London Living Wage. Will you use your Congress of Leaders meetings to not only get more boroughs on board but also to promote a united, cross-party London voice to national government to take this problem more seriously?

The London Assembly Economy Committee found that there are four sectors in London where low pay is concentrated: hospitality; cleaning; retail; and social care. In June I asked question 2014/1785 about whether or not you had considered contacting the large landowning estates in Westminster (e.g. Grosvenor and The Portman Estate) to discuss using their influence as landlords to get their tenants to pay the London Living Wage. You said it "remains a consideration for future actions". Will you now take this action?

Wi-Fi in Museums

  • Reference: 2015/0101
  • Question by: Stephen Knight
  • Meeting date: 21 January 2015
In DD1272 the justification for increasing the Wi-Fi Museums Scheme from £1.2m to £1.75m (at the expense of the SME Broadband Voucher Scheme) is that it "will translate to economic growth in London, greater inward investment, increased visitors attraction, new jobs and employment growth." Can you explain exactly how this would be the case?
