Joseph Rowntree Foundation and Trussell Trust estimate that the weekly cost of a basic existence would be £120 for a single adult and £200 for a couple. However, even after the 10.1 per cent benefits uprating, the universal credit standard allowance will be £85 for a single adult and £134 a week for a couple. Following the announcement of free school meals for Key Stage 2 pupils at London’s schools and academies, what conversations have you had with either government or local government beyond London about how this could be extended further to support struggling families?
