The calculation for the basic existence does not include housing, with Spare Room estimating that average London rents are £215 a week. This puts Londoners in need of £415 a week in order to live on the basics. Do you expect significant change to London’s Living Wage this year in order to help address this?

Joseph Rowntree Foundation and Trussell Trust estimate that the weekly cost of a basic existence would be £120 for a single adult and £200 for a couple. However, even after the 10.1 per cent benefits uprating, the universal credit standard allowance will be £85 for a single adult and £134 a week for a couple. Following the announcement of free school meals for Key Stage 2 pupils at London’s schools and academies, what conversations have you had with either government or local government beyond London about how this could be extended further to support struggling families?
