The future of the Metropolitan Police Service (Supplementary) [13]

  • Question by: David Kurten
  • Meeting date: 06 July 2017
David Kurten AM: Thank you, Madam Chair. I want to ask a few questions following on from the discussion earlier about hate crime. Deputy Commissioner, you mentioned different categories. You had a race‑based hate crime, religious, anti-Semitic, Islamophobic, homophobic, transphobic, disability and perhaps some other categories. If you have religious hate crime and then also anti-Semitic and Islamophobic, are they counted twice? What is the difference between those categories?

  • Question by: Lord Bailey of Paddington
  • Meeting date: 06 July 2017
I would like to ask the Mayor first: what is your office going to do to address that problem and turn it around?

Tony Devenish AM: Mayor, would you support calls, if there was evidence, to have the same sentencing tariff for acid attacks as for knife crime?

  • Question by: Leonie Cooper
  • Meeting date: 06 July 2017
Leonie Cooper AM: Thank you very much, Chair. I wondered if we could come back to the issue of the borough command unit mergers. It has been a particular topic of conversation, as you can imagine, in both Merton and Wandsworth because we are looking at a four‑borough merge, the only one proposed for the whole of London. Some people have raised a number of concerns and issues about it. Some people have raised some potential advantages as they are four fairly compact boroughs, three in outer London and one inner London. They are quite different in some ways. I...

  • Question by: Andrew Dismore
  • Meeting date: 06 July 2017
Andrew Dismore AM: There have been worrying recent press reports that 40 more police stations are to close. Which police stations are to go due to the Government’s funding shortfall?

  • Question by: Tom Copley
  • Meeting date: 06 July 2017
Tom Copley AM: Thank you very much, Chair. That leads us nicely on to my question, which is about the rise in hate crime. Racist and religious hate crime rose 19% in the past year. I welcome your commitment to a zero-tolerance approach to hate crime. Is that commitment being fulfilled?

  • Question by: Unmesh Desai
  • Meeting date: 06 July 2017
Unmesh Desai AM: Thank you, Chair. Thank you, Mr Mayor. I certainly do not accept that you have been sleeping on the job because I have raised this issue with you directly through correspondence and you replied back to me. I have also raised this issue at previous P&C meetings. Mr Mayor, you may have seen the horrific and very moving pictures of Resham Khan and Jameel Mkhitar in the media. They were in a car in Beckton at a roundabout when a person completely unknown to them came and squirted acid in their faces. Jameel showed tremendous courage in...

  • Question by: Andrew Dismore
  • Meeting date: 06 July 2017
Andrew Dismore AM: Would you agree that neighbourhood policing is a key part of the ‘golden thread’ in the collection of intelligence about the fight against terrorism?

The future of the Metropolitan Police Service (Supplementary) [5]

  • Question by: Joanne McCartney
  • Meeting date: 06 July 2017
Joanne McCartney AM: Thank you. Mr Mayor, you talked quite rightly earlier about the unprecedented terror attacks and of course we have had the tragedy of the Grenfell [Tower] fire. We have also heard that policing without those events was already under great strain. Can I ask? Has there been any offer from the Government or any promise that it will make extra payments to the MPS to cover what is obviously the ongoing pressure of investigating these events?

  • Question by: Gareth Bacon MP
  • Meeting date: 06 July 2017
Susan Hall AM: Thank you, Chair. Mr Mayor, a few days after you were elected, you said in an interview, “Every time a young person carries a knife, it is a sign of failure”, and since you have been Mayor the figures have gone up incredibly. Therefore, would you accept that you have failed?
