Fire safety in London’s social housing
More engagement between social housing landlords and residents is needed to ensure Londoners living in social housing feel confident in their fire safety practises.
That is what the London Assembly Fire Committee has found following an investigation into fire safety in London’s social housing.
"What are we waiting for, my building, me to burn? What are we waiting for here?" – one guest’s testimony underscored the urgency of ensuring that every resident can have confidence in the safety of their home.
The Committee has today written to the Mayor and London Fire Brigade (LFB), calling for the Mayor to explore developing a Good Landlord Charter, with access to Greater London Authority (GLA) funding, contingent on meeting commitments on fire safety.
The Committee is also calling on the Mayor to ensure when setting an updated Community Risk Management Plan, that LFB includes key performance indicators (KPIs) for social housing fire safety visits.
Anne Clarke AM, Chair of the London Assembly Fire Committee, said:
“Since the tragic events at Grenfell in 2017, the victims and survivors have shown extraordinary courage, determination and resilience in their pursuit of justice.
“Their tireless campaigning has ensured that the failures exposed by the tragedy have not been forgotten and has driven the national conversation on building safety.
“However, nine years after the Grenfell Tower fire, we heard compelling evidence that many social housing residents continue to feel unsafe in their homes.
“We remain concerned that the culture change recommended by Grenfell Tower Inquiry - and demanded by survivors, and other social housing tenants at risk – is in desperate need of further action.
“Our recommendations are intended to help drive that change. No Londoner should live in fear of fire safety, and we are urging the Mayor and the LFB to urgently consider them as part of the wider work needed to ensure Londoners in social housing are kept safe for now and future generations.”
