The London Assembly Fire Committee has written to the Home Office and Ministry of Housing, Communities, and Local Government recommending actions to make London’s buildings safe and compliant with fire safety regulations.
Among the recommendations made by the Committee are:
- Introducing Fixed Penalty Notices and allowing the seizure of buildings that have not been made safe, to speed up action to carry out essential safety work and reduce the London Fire Brigade’s enforcement costs.
- The creation of a national strategy to develop a skilled workforce and increase the number of fire safety engineers
- Asking the government to give consideration to making enforcement self-funding
The Committee also asks the government for more details on the rollout of Residential Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (RPEEPs), which are intended to keep disabled residents safe in the event of a fire.
