Our Transport Committee sets out its response to two rail franchise consultations: the combined Thameslink, Southern and Great Northern (TSGN); and Southeastern, based on its past work on rail services in London.
As well as responding to the specific consultation questions in relation to each franchise, the responses highlight common issues like the need for: increased rail capacity to help reduce overcrowding; better service standards; and station improvements.
The TSGN franchise is particularly important to the capital given it will be the biggest franchise ever let, covering many rail services used by Londoners. The Committee wants to see the successful franchisee build on the £6 billion invested in the Thameslink programme for improvements like the redevelopment of London Bridge station and new trains so the programme delivers maximum benefits for passengers.
In relation to Southeastern, the Committee has previously raised particular issues about the current service. Most recently, in response to the Government’s consultation on rail decentralisation, we expressed support for the Mayor of London and Transport for London (TfL)’s proposals relating to the South East London metro services which we argued would generate significant benefits for passengers.
