What will the Mayor’s new housing targets mean for Londoners?
The London Plan is the Mayor's blueprint for how London will grow and develop over the coming decades, shaping decisions on jobs, transport, infrastructure, environment as well as housing across the capital. With the draft London Plan now out for public consultation, the London Assembly is undertaking a 2-week programme of scrutiny to assess whether its proposals can meet London's future needs and support communities across the city. The Housing Committee will feed directly into the Assembly's formal response to the consultation and propose recommendations to the Mayor on what more can be done.
The Mayor’s Draft London Plan sets a target of 558,000 new homes over the next decade, around 55,800 a year, despite the Government’s assessment that London needs 850,000 additional homes over that period. The GLA’s own analysis also shows London needs around 89,300 homes per year, including 31,300 social and low cost rented homes, 14,200 intermediate tenure homes and 43,800 homes for market sale and rent.
The London Assembly Housing Committee will tomorrow examine how the targets can be achieved in the current market, as well as the Draft Plan’s approach to affordable housing, housing size mix, affordable housing thresholds, and the transport and infrastructure needed to support future growth in the number of homes.
