Assembly podcast - 25 years covering London government
In its final 25th Anniversary podcast released today, the London Assembly speaks with former BBC London News Political Editor, Tim Donovan about the ups and downs of documenting three Mayoral terms and the Assembly.
In the podcast, Tim Donovan discusses the big stories he covered during the Mayoralty of Ken Livingstone, Boris Johnson and Sadiq Khan. He also reflects on the role of the London Assembly and why the scrutiny body is so important for Londoners.
The Assembly has scrutinised all three Mayors of London, since it was formally launched in July 2000.
During the podcast, Mr Donovan comments on:
- Ken Livingstone’s ‘secret’ trip to Cuba and Venezuela
- Boris Johnson’s Olympic legacy and interview style
- The impact of Sadiq Khan’s message of diversity and his handling of COVID
- Strengthening the powers of the London Assembly
Lord Duvall of Woolwich OBE AM, Chair of the London Assembly, who conducted the interview, said:
“This is the final episode in a series of special 25th Anniversary podcasts. I’ve walked down memory lane with former Mayor, Boris Johnson, first London Assembly Chair, Sir Trevor Phillips, Ken Livingstone’s former Chief of Staff, Simon Fletcher and now former BBC London Political Editor, Tim Donovan.
“The podcasts have been an important reminder of how scrutiny influences the thinking of a Mayor of London and how the role of the Mayor and Assembly has evolved over time.
“Tim Donovan’s reflections show the different personalities of each of London’s three Mayors - and we are delighted to be able to capture those memories as part of our 25th Anniversary celebrations.
“I know the London Assembly will continue to be the voice of Londoners for at least another 25 years.”
