Biography
Sem was elected as the London Assembly Member for North East London – which includes Hackney, Islington and Waltham Forest, in 2021.
Sem is Labour’s lead on housing at the Assembly, spearheading campaigns on renters rights, more support for mortgage holders, and crucially, building more homes in the capital for social rent.
Her successful campaigns include lobbying government to increase Local Housing Allowance, holding the Met Police to account over their mistreatment of ethnic minority children such as Child Q and protecting Hackney’s historic railway arches and the businesses that operate within them. Sem is also a councillor in Hackney, in Hackney Downs ward, and is Deputy Cabinet Member for Private Renting and Housing Affordability.
