Following a tumultuous week for the Government, Green Party London Assembly Member Caroline Russell has written to the new Home Secretary James Cleverly – a former London Assembly Member himself – with an invitation to discuss concerns over Met policing standards.

In her letter, Caroline Russell AM, who chairs the London Assembly Police and Crime Committee, outlined her concern with the “widespread and historic disproportionality of the policing of Londoners,” pointing to the consistent over-policing of young and Black Londoners.

Additionally, Caroline reiterated her concerns over the previous Home Secretary's “attempt to exert political pressure” on the Met’s policing of protest, specifically in relation to the recent Armistice Day and March for Palestine public demonstrations.

Caroline also shared her optimism that the new Home Secretary’s “experience as a London Assembly Member will give pause to such political intervention from your office in future, and instead encourage greater sensitivity to the diversity of our city and the importance of tolerance and respect.”
