Key information

Summary of request

Your request

Can you please tell me how much cleaner will the air get once green taxes are in place?

Our response

We have assumed that you are asking about the upcoming expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) across all London boroughs.

The ULEZ is not a tax. Only drivers of vehicles that do not meet certain emission standards (Euro 4 for petrol cars and vans and Euro 6 for diesel cars and vans) need to pay a charge to drive in the zone.

Already 9 out of 10 cars and nearly 8 out of 10 vans seen driving in outer London on an average day meet the standards, meaning their drivers will not need to pay the charge.

The evidence base and expected outcomes of the proposals to expand the ULEZ London-wide were set out in the key consultation documents, which are available on Transport for London’s consultation page.

The most relevant documents are the ‘London-wide ULEZ Integrated Impact Assessment (ULEZ Scheme IIA)’ and ‘Our proposals to help improve air quality tackle the climate emergency and reduce congestion by expanding the ULEZ London-wide and other measures’.
