Summary of request
You requested:
Please can you provide salary information for your officers who handle Freedom of Information requests. I do not require any personal information but ideally salary bands and average/maximum/minimum salaries for staff in these roles.
Please can you also advise if officers in these roles also handle other enquiries, such as complaints, subject access requests or GDPR?
Our response:
I can confirm that the GLA holds information within the scope of your request.
Any/all GLA staff may deal with FOI requests to the GLA whenever a request is received that requires them to search records or otherwise provide input for their respective service area. However, for the purposes of your request our answers will focus on the Information Governance unit only.
There are currently 3 members of staff employed in the GLA’s Information Governance team:
One Information Governance Manager and Data Protection Officer Grade 11
Two Information Governance Officers Grade 7
[One Information Governance Officer Grade 7 role vacant]
Salary scales are published annually: (see link to GLA salary scales below).
The Information Governance Officers are primarily responsible for handling FOI and EIR requests and for coordinating responses (along with other GLA staff).
The GLA’s Information Governance Manager and Data Protection Officer would usually deal with complaints about the Information Governance Unit, and with the most complex GDPR enquiries. The manager usually handles complaints about FOI handling (Internal Reviews) which is in line with the ICO’s guidance about good practice: “It is good practice for the internal review to be carried out, wherever possible, by somebody other than the person who issued the initial response” (see link below).
However, the Information Governance Officers do handle Internal Reviews when appropriate (e.g. they did not handle the original request) or necessary (e.g. manager on leave). They regularly handle Subject Access Requests and some GDPR enquiries.
