FOI - Payments to Stonewall [Oct 2024]

Key information

Request reference number: MGLA160924-1020

Date of response:

Summary of request

Your request and our response:

I can confirm that the GLA does hold the information within scope of your request, which is outlined as follows:

I would like to know how much money the org paid to Stonewall in 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024.

  • 2021 - £3,000
  • 2022- £3,000
  • 2023 – £3,462
  • 2024 - £3,090

I would like to know if the org pays annual membership to any Stonewall schemes. If yes, which schemes, how much money, and which date each year does membership run from/to.

  • Yes to Diversity Champions membership (as above). As part of the membership we have access to resources and we can submit to the Stonewall index. From September each year. £2,575 plus VAT

I would like to know who took the decision for it to be appropriate for the org to be under Stonewall's influence, and on what basis this decision was taken.

  • Although your request can take the form of a question, rather than a request for specific documents, we do not have to answer your question if it would require the creation of new information or the provision of a judgement, explanation, advice or opinion that was not already recorded at the time of your request.

I would like to know if the org has undertaken any similar political activism like it has in being a member of Stonewall in support of gender critical views, LGB people who reject any association with the new version of Stonewall because they consider it to be advocating against LGB people, and the importance of single sex spaces, services and sports for women and girls. If it has, please list the activities, dates and spend involved.

  • Unfortunately, we will not be able to answer this part of your request without some clarification.  Although your request can take the form of a question, rather than a request for specific documents, we do not have to answer your question if it would require the creation of new information or the provision of a judgement, explanation, advice or opinion that was not already recorded at the time of your request.

Advice/assistance:

If you are able to reframe your request in a way that does not require subjective interpretation or assumptions, the GLA should be able to comply with this element of your request – for example:

  • Simplify request eg “What LGBTQIA+ organisations does the GLA’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Team formally engage with? Please list any GLA spend on membership of these organisations or their schemes”
  • Or you may wish to name the specific organisations that you are interested in and ask whether the GLA has made payments to them?
  • Alternatively, you may be interested in the GLA’s spending reports where you can see any payments over £250 made by the GLA (searchable by organisation name) Our spending | London City Hall

Once you have clarified this part of your request, we will be able to begin to process your request. Under section 1(3) of the Freedom of Information Act, a public authority need not comply with a request unless any further information reasonably required to locate the information is supplied.

Does the org plan to continue to give money to Stonewall? Are there any future plans to pay money to Stonewall?

  • We do not donate to Stonewall although we do have our annual Diversity Champions membership.
