Summary of request
Your request
It is widespread knowledge that the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre (NSC) has declined in recent years. The 50m pool was drained before the lockdown and a cracked window was found to be the cause of a leak. It has been shut ever since.
Funding was approved to repair the pool last year but the public has not had any updates. Are there any updates regarding the closed swimming pool in the Centre?
Our response
In December 2021 the Mayor confirmed his commitment to allocate funding (MD2910) for a comprehensive renovation of the Centre, including the repair of the 50m and diving pools.
Following this decision, the GLA has carried out a range of activities including further survey work, obtaining project management advice on phasing and sequencing of the works, and the procurement of a multi-disciplinary consultancy team to develop the spatial and technical designs.
This work contributes to the development of a coherent strategy and solution that
best benefits the local community and support sporting needs both now and in the future.
The GLA and our multi-disciplinary consultant team continue to work hard on this strategy and a clear programme for delivery, including the reopening of the pools.
As I am sure you will appreciate, the NSC is a complex project and there remains a large amount of technical and design work to complete before construction work can commence. It is therefore important that the programme is robust and deliverable in advance of sharing more widely.
Our development and testing of the programme will continue over the coming weeks alongside the formulation of a series of public engagement sessions in the new year to support the development of the proposals. This will provide an opportunity to input into scheme and understand better our programme for delivery
