As the elected Chair of the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group (C40), the Mayor led critical discussions at the 8th C40 World Mayors Summit, including on how cities can cut emissions more quickly, create green jobs and protect their people from the worst effects of climate change. The Summit was the largest convening of C40 mayors post pandemic, committed to taking action to tackling the climate crisis.
C40 is a network of the world’s megacities committed to addressing climate change. It supports cities to collaborate effectively, share knowledge and drive meaningful, measurable and sustainable action on climate change. It connects 97 of the world’s greatest cities to take bold climate action. Representing 700+ million citizens and one quarter of the global economy, Mayors of the network are leading the way in climate action and delivering on the most ambitious goals of the Paris Agreement.
The C40 World Mayors Summit brought together city leaders, businesses, the youth movement, civil society and others around the theme “United in Action” to keep the climate crisis at the top of global agendas and highlight the need for a Green New Deal to tackle the current cost of living, climate and ecological emergencies.
The Summit had three main areas of focus:
- Delivering an inclusive, sustainable, and job-creating recovery
- Ensuring the wellbeing of their residents
- Advocating for increased green financing to cities now
Announcements from the Mayor at the Summit included –
- C40 Cities, United in Action will create 50 million new, well-paid, and meaningful green jobs by 2030, research suggests that the number of green jobs in London could more than double by 2030 to just over half a million.
- A record investment for climate projects in the Global South through the multi-donor C40 Cities Finance Facility which is supporting 35 projects in the Global South, projected to access over $1 billion of finance for implementation.
- A pioneering approach to fossil fuel free electricity in 3 cities including London working with Google to pilot a 24/7 approach to carbon free energy.
- A partnership with Minecraft (through C40 Cities) to improve youth engagement on the climate emergency by using the world’s most popular video game to solve some of London’s most pressing challenges and drive young people to imagine a city that is net zero and climate resilient. Microsoft will provide licenses for free to ensure digital inclusion as access for all Londoners.
