Summary of request
Information relating to street trees delivered under both the Trees for Streets programme (2022-2023) and the Urban Tree Challenge Fund from Defra. The latter was formed of two major grants from Defra’s Urban Tree Challenge Fund (UTCF), matched with additional Mayoral funding:
- Over £2 million to plant nearly 7,000 street trees across 20 boroughs (Jan 2020 – Mar 2021), targeted in areas of low canopy cover (UTCF Round 1).
- Over £2.7 million to plant over 6,100 street trees (Nov 2021 – Mar 2025), targeted in areas of low canopy cover and high deprivation (UTCF Round 3).
You would like to know:
- Across both programmes, how many street trees have been planted in London? This should cover the time period Jan 2020 – March 2025.
- What species of trees were planted? Please provide a breakdown of the numbers of each species and ideally their location in the city
- Of the trees which were planted, what assessment has been done of how many are still alive? If you have that information, please provide
- How many trees planted under these programmes have since been removed
Our response
Across the Mayor’s funding programmes for UTCF Rounds 1 and 3 and the Trees for Streets 2022-23 programme, 13,817 trees were planted in London. The majority of these trees are street trees, although some UTCF tree planting is in other locations (such as parks). We do not hold data on the number of trees specifically planted in streets. Note: Delivery of trees funded though the Mayor’s support for Trees for Streets continued into 2023-24, and if this is included, the total figure is 13,995.
We do not hold comprehensive data on the species of trees planted across these programmes, nor their planted locations. Individual boroughs, who were responsible for the planting, may hold this information.
We have not undertaken an assessment of how many trees are still alive and do not hold data on survival rates.
We do not hold data on how many trees planted under these programmes have since been removed. Individual boroughs, who were responsible for the planting (and subsequent maintenance), may hold this information.
