Summary of request

Your request

Please could you tell me how much pollution and toxic fumes will be released in to the atmosphere above London at this year's NYE Festival.

Our response

The Mayor is committed to tackling the climate emergency and improving London’s air quality, and is taking action by carefully managing the environmental impacts of GLA events.

We have not started calculations for the impact of this years’ display as we are still in the middle of the design process. Figures from the 2022 show, which was of a similar type and scale to that being planned in 2023, show that the CO2 created was calculated to be 252kg.

We also hold measurements for the ‘solids’ produced by the 2022 display:

  • PM10 (insoluble) 36kg
  • PM2.5 (insoluble) 18kg

Environment and sustainability are embedded in the procurement and contracting process for London’s New Year’s Eve event, with an environmental plan to manage key environmental impacts which the event management company consider throughout the planning and delivery process. These practices have meant that the emissions in 2022 were reduced by 23% since 2016
