EIR - Carbon footprint of Data communications [Jan 2024]

Key information

Request reference number: MGLA020124-2917

Date of response:

Summary of request

Your request

What is carbon footprint of data communications in London city in CO2 per year in MT?

Our response

The Greater London Authority (GLA) does not hold the information you are seeking.

There is some information within the scope of your request contained within the consumption emissions report by London Councils. This looks at emissions generated outside of London to deliver goods and services within London.

This report indicates that communications were responsible for 0.04 tCO2e/person in 2020 and household electrical appliances 0.01 tCO2e/person. Communications relates to postal services, telephone and telefax equipment / service.

However, the consumption work splits emissions from businesses across industrial sectors – so the emissions from communications by a business that delivers food would be reported under food consumption emissions, not communications. Similarly some of the emissions from data centres will be split across the industrial sectors they service and also not reported under communications.
