Your request
The Mayor recently announced that a pilot would install air filters in 200 schools. Could you provide a list of all the research papers that have been considered:
- in making the decision to install these air filters - including impact assessments etc.
- by City Hall's review into which air filters to use. (Mentioned in the linked article).
Simple citations, DOI, or web links would suffice.
Our response
There are two elements to the 200 schools filter project. Firstly, we are currently undertaking practical in-classroom testing of four lower-cost particulate matter filters to ascertain which offers the best pollution reduction capacity, value for money, suitability for use in schools, etc. This research is currently underway with results expected in June.
In the background we are also starting to develop the detailed plans for the roll out to 200 schools which will be informed by that testing project just mentioned. Two research papers are recorded as being considered as part of the initial decision to install filters through in the schools. They are:
- Rawat, N. and Kumar, P., 2023. Interventions for improving indoor and outdoor air quality in and around schools. Science of the Total Environment, 858, p.159813.
- Abhijith, K.V., Kukadia, V. and Kumar, P., 2022. Investigation of air pollution mitigation measures, ventilation, and indoor air quality at three schools in London. Atmospheric Environment, 289, p.119303.
