EIR - 24 hour venues in London [Apr 2023]

Key information

Request reference number: MGLA190423-5282

Date of response:

Summary of request

Your request

  1. The number of 24-hour venues in London year-on-year for the past decade.
  2. The number of 24-hour venues that have closed in the city year-on-year for the past decade.

Our response

Our data collection for most types of cultural spaces started in 2018 and does not include the category ’24 hour venue’ therefore we are unable to provide the number of 24-hour venues year-on-year and the number of closures for the past decade.

However, the London Datastore holds datasets on pubs, grassroots music venues, music venues, LGBT+ night-time venues and other types of cultural spaces that may have a 24-hour function.

LGBTQ+ night-time venues

In 2017 there were 47 LGBTQ+ venues in operation in London, and the number increased to 51 in 2018. The 2019 audit of LGBTQ+ venues showed that the number of LGBTQ+ venues remained stable for the first time in a decade. Prior to that, the sector had seen a net loss of 58 per cent of venues between 2006 and 2017.

Further information from UCL who initially did this work.

Grassroots music venues

Grassroots music venues were first mapped in 2016 showing 94 venues. The number remained stable in 2017 and 2018 and there was an increase to 100 venues in 2019.

Prior to this, London lost 35% of its grassroots music venues between 2007 and 2015.

The 2019 data download is available through the London Datastore.

Pubs

The 2018 pubs data note was produced using information from the Campaign for Real Ale
(CAMRA) and the inter-departmental business register (IDBR). The research showed that
London had lost 27 per cent of its pubs since 2001. This amounted to 60 pubs closures in
2015-16 (1.6 per cent fall) and 85 pubs closures in 2016-17 (2.4 per cent fall) - more than one a week. The 2019 data capture provided by CAMRA showed 4,098 pubs in London.

The 2019 data download is available through the London Datastore, as above.

Please also see the 2018 London Pubs Annual Data Note.

A data update to pubs, grassroots music venues, music venues, LGBT+ night-time venues and other types of cultural spaces that may have a 24-hour function will be published on the London Datastore shortly.
