Biography

Florence Eshalomi AM has been a member of the London Assembly since May 2016. As a representative of the Lambeth and Southwark constituency - covering Streatham, Dulwich and West Norwood, Vauxhall, Peckham and Southwark and Old Bermondsey - Florence strives to put the issues that matter to local people firmly on the political agenda.

As of 13 December 2019 Florence is also the Labour Member of Parliament for Vauxhall.

Florence was a Brixton Hill councillor for 12 years and a former member of Lambeth Council’s Cabinet, until she stood down in 2018 to focus solely on her role at the GLA. Florence is well attuned to advocating the needs of local people. During her time as Cabinet member for Culture, Sport and the Olympics, Florence was responsible for the delivery of the hugely popular Lambeth Country Show and chaired the Libraries Commission.

As a former Chair of Lambeth’s housing scrutiny committee, Deputy Cabinet member for communities and young people, and special representative for tackling youth violence, Florence has a strong record of tackling the big issues that matter to South Londoners. She is keen to pursue this work further on the London Assembly.

Florence resolutely believes public office should be truly representative and has led endeavours to boost youth representation in London politics. She led on introducing Lambeth Council’s youth mayor elections in 2007 and London Councils’ “Be a Councillor” campaign.

Prior to her election, she worked in a range of campaigning, public affairs and policy roles. Florence worked for the Runnymede Trust, the UK’s leading Race Equality Think Thank. She also worked for Four Communications – a leading communications agency, Islington Council and the Labour Party.

At City Hall, Florence sits on the Police and Crime Committee, the Fire, Resilience and Emergency Planning Committee and is the Deputy Chair on the Transport Committee. She is also the City Hall Labour Group Spokesperson for Transport. In her role at City Hall, Florence is keen to put the political spotlight firmly on transport, policing, health, housing, equalities, culture, education and public services.
