The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, is committed to working with businesses to help step up the fight against climate change. As part of London Business Climate Leaders he is working with 11 prominent London businesses to help meet his ambitious target for London to become a zero carbon city.

The group will commit to reducing carbon emissions from their London-based business operations above and beyond national targets, and will share new ways of sustainable working. They will also use their joint influence to encourage other London businesses to do the same.

This partnership is led by world sustainability leaders CDP, C40 and The B Team, with the support of the We Mean Business Coalition.

Businesses within the network have a collective annual turnover of around £192 billion and represent over 165,000 employees in London. Their workplaces also occupy over 28 million square feet of London’s commercial buildings.

Commitments to carbon reduction

Each business has committed to taking actions in the following areas:

Clean transport

Switch to zero emission capable vehicles for company owned vehicles in London, and/or support the development of electric vehicle charging required in London by installing infrastructure on London-based properties by 2025 (or nearest procurement date).

Clean Energy

Commit to purchasing 100 per cent renewable electricity for London-based properties and mapping on site renewable potential of London-based properties by 2020.

Waste and circular economy

Reduce waste generated by 50 per cent by 2030, achieve a 75 per cent recycling rate and reach zero waste to landfill by 2025 – ensuring only unavoidable waste is sent for incineration.

Energy efficient buildings

Set energy efficiency targets for 2020, 2030 and 2050 that demonstrate a trajectory towards zero carbon buildings by 2050 in London.

Many of the businesses are going even further with additional commitments such as incentives for staff to take low emissions transport and programmes to phase out single-use plastic packaging in their organisations.

Businesses within the network include

  • Derwent London
  • ISG
  • Landsec
  • Morgan Sindall
  • Tesco
  • Siemens
  • Sky
  • Informa
  • RELX Group
