Off-peak Fridays fare trial

From 8 March to 31 May, off-peak pay as you go fares will be available all day on Fridays on Tube and Rail across London and parts of the Southeast.

Will cheaper fares on a Friday encourage you to ...

  • use the Tube or Rail on a Friday, for work or leisure? Why or why not?
  • swap your usual day(s) of travel to a Friday? Why or why not?
  • use the Tube or Rail instead of other modes of transport? Why or why not?

Did you know?

While London's economy has recovered strongly from the pandemic, the number of people travelling on Fridays is recovering more slowly than other days of the week. For example, Tube ridership on Fridays is around 73% of pre-pandemic levels. This isn't the case mid-week, where ridership is at 80-85% and continuing to grow.

This has a knock-on effect on venues that rely on footfall such as London’s art galleries and theatres, as well as hospitality businesses like cafes, bars and restaurants.

To encourage more Londoners to take the Tube and Rail on Friday, off-peak pay as you go fares will be trialled all day on Fridays. The trial covers the Tube, DLR, London Overground, Elizabeth line and some National Rail services.

The discussion ran from 12 March 2024 - 31 May 2024

It's an off-peak single fare; daily caps still apply and have increased.

If this isn’t some error, I’m pretty upset about the policy. Croydon is already screwed with being in a higher zone than it should. We’re also paying 15% council tax. And now this deal doesn’t apply. We’re the most populous borough in London. Feels like we’re just a cow getting milked.

If I’m mistaken and it’s an error, then I’d like to see the scheme be more accurate

It's a good incentive to travel on friday when the WFH people are WFH.
I hope it's a success. Definitely worth a try.
It's a good incentive for me to go up to town anyway.

It's a great iinitiative and useful to get people back int  the City. I cycle everywhere but looking forward to using the discounts.

For this particular journey, I would only ever use TfL services and would never drive my car.

I sometimes have to travel from Zone 2 to 6 (away from the centre of London) at peak times and don't benefit from off-peak fares even though the trains I use are often very uncrowded as the peak journeys are really only the ones going into London.

I prefer to travel when the number of people is lower - so Friday was a better option for me. I can't stand for the whole journey - especially on the Victoria Line which travels fast. I need a seat, but when the tube is crowded there is little or no chance of being able to sit.

I understand why the fares have been dropped, but if this means that I will be less likely to get a seat, then I'm likely to shift mode to motorcycle instead.

As a pensioner, and sometimes have to travel early by train, why can`t I use my freedom pass at anytime, any day. I don`t think many F/P holders want to travel before 6am. When you live in the South of London trains are your only option in most cases.  And why  am I not able to use my F/pass before 9am on the busses. I fully support this change, and more. Train fairs are too expensive.

Yes, the buses could lift the 9 am curfew.

It’s a great idea and will have a really positive impact on my students.

When scheduling things I have to do in town, this will definitely encourage me to go on a Friday. As a freelance, remote worker, I really feel the cost of transport when I go into town. It was different when I used to have to have a monthly travel card for work. Now, with everything so much more expensive, and my income going down as a lot of my clients are cost cutting, initiatives like this are very useful to me. Can definitely see some lovely Friday afternoons in some of London's wonderful free museums coming up in April. Can't let money worries suck the joy out of everything, right!

I don't think anybody is suggesting that the Mayor of London invented the idea of off peak fares, or even off peak fares on a Friday. He is just implementing them on Tube and Rail services that are tolled by TfL.

One way or the other, Sadiq Khan, albeit like a lot of other politicians, will always spin things in order to shine a positive light upon himself especially given that it is the Mayoral Election Year.

I fully support this change on Fridays, but don't need to take advantage of travelling at Peak times

Avatar for -

Does this mean that Freedom Passes can be used at any time on Fridays?

Avatar for -

Next Friday I will be travelling to Welcome Centre in Euston Road. I will now leave earlier and have a coffee before meeting friends.

I'm in between jobs right now so splashing out not an option, however if I wanted to take advantage of London's Free attractions, parks, museums etc, Friday would be the day for it because of the off peak experiment. I like the idea that Friday kind of becomes a part of the weekend a little bit more if you can take advantage. It will be interesting to see what happens with the numbers travelling. I wouldn't have known about it though, apart from getting an email because I've joined Talk London - so maybe more in-your-face marketing on tube and other travel posters?

It might be a worthwhile scheme but for the fact that here in Bexley Borough we have no Overground, Underground, DLR, Trams or Elizabeth Line (which conveniently ends on the boundary of Greenwich Borough). If the scheme includes South Eastern then it might be useful for early morning appointments, on a Friday only, at some of the inner London hospitals. As for the 'Super loop' bus service, If we wait here in Sidcup for the SL3 to arrive and let a 269 bus, also going to Bromley, leave the SL3 seems to be unable to overtake the 269 on its way to Bromley already so it is therefore no quicker on the SL3.

I have a freedom pass. It would be good to be able to use this on rail transport but living in the suburbs I really need to take a bus to get to nearest rail/tube stations. The local buses are always busy before 9am , with school children and commuters so I really don't think freedom passes should be allowed before 9:30 on the buses.
