From 8 March to 31 May, off-peak pay as you go fares will be available all day on Fridays on Tube and Rail across London and parts of the Southeast.

Will cheaper fares on a Friday encourage you to ...

  • use the Tube or Rail on a Friday, for work or leisure? Why or why not?
  • swap your usual day(s) of travel to a Friday? Why or why not?
  • use the Tube or Rail instead of other modes of transport? Why or why not?

Did you know?

While London's economy has recovered strongly from the pandemic, the number of people travelling on Fridays is recovering more slowly than other days of the week. For example, Tube ridership on Fridays is around 73% of pre-pandemic levels. This isn't the case mid-week, where ridership is at 80-85% and continuing to grow.

This has a knock-on effect on venues that rely on footfall such as London’s art galleries and theatres, as well as hospitality businesses like cafes, bars and restaurants.

To encourage more Londoners to take the Tube and Rail on Friday, off-peak pay as you go fares will be trialled all day on Fridays. The trial covers the Tube, DLR, London Overground, Elizabeth line and some National Rail services.

The discussion ran from 12 March 2024 - 31 May 2024

Too complex - as someone else said, its gimmicky. Make it 50% Friday - all day Friday - and people will notice and use it

I really appreciate the Friday travel window because I was finding it expensive to attend an exercise class which started at nine o'clock. I had to travel during peak hours to get to it and it was making it difficult for me to stay fit. The early window on Friday also makes it possible to get to a train station  earlier and that is another benefit; it means I arrive at my final destination earlier. I wish the open Friday scheme would continue until Christmas!!! Thank you, a great initiative.

Hi there, I’m going to be volunteering as part of the UEFA champions league festival and will be travelling on Friday. Really good idea.

It is a good idea as it also will bring back the 'Friday buzz' that disappeared with the advent of the pandemic. Finally, this will have a positive knock on effect on people traveling from outside of London .

It's a pointless gimic. Fares are off-peak anyway most of the day, including going into town in the evening.  It just confuses things.  If someone wants to travel on a Friday they will anyway.

The fundamental issue is the new working week practices.
Most offices now run Tues - Thurs as core days of operation.
Off peak Fridays have been hugely beneficial to me as I do commute and have a social life on Fridays however, the pull to come into central is not there anymore.
Fridays are now when you visit local shops and high streets which is brilliant BUT central London due to rising crime and petty thefts is not safe and doesn’t have anything different than local spaces.
Central London is lacking the WOW and the reason to visit as the theatre district is overpriced and bars/restaurants struggle with rising costs

If you want people to use public transport please make the fares affordable, they are currently too high.

Good for getting out of the house on quieter days in the office and you can trip chain to do fun things after work

I normally didn’t go out on Fridays to save money. But the off peak makes a small but noticeable difference to me

I would normally work from home on Friday. However, seen the cheaper fare I decided to commute to work, that meant that I got to enjoy Friday night out with friends, as otherwise I would spend it at home.

For me personally cost of travel doesn't matter as I have a disabled freedom pass but I do think it is useful for people going into work and also stimulating the tourist economy

I travel 6 days a week for work, but not to the point of a travel card covering the costs - so off peak Fridays help offset a little more of the cost. Peak is mostly a tax on commuters who can't choose when they travel.

I can choose which days I go into the office (which has to be 3 times a week) - me and my close colleagues have regularly travelled in on a Friday to take advantage, and would love for the scheme to continue! It’s especially helpful for them as they’re travelling from Upminster and it’s significantly cheaper.
