From 8 March to 31 May, off-peak pay as you go fares will be available all day on Fridays on Tube and Rail across London and parts of the Southeast.

Will cheaper fares on a Friday encourage you to ...

  • use the Tube or Rail on a Friday, for work or leisure? Why or why not?
  • swap your usual day(s) of travel to a Friday? Why or why not?
  • use the Tube or Rail instead of other modes of transport? Why or why not?

Did you know?

While London's economy has recovered strongly from the pandemic, the number of people travelling on Fridays is recovering more slowly than other days of the week. For example, Tube ridership on Fridays is around 73% of pre-pandemic levels. This isn't the case mid-week, where ridership is at 80-85% and continuing to grow.

This has a knock-on effect on venues that rely on footfall such as London’s art galleries and theatres, as well as hospitality businesses like cafes, bars and restaurants.

To encourage more Londoners to take the Tube and Rail on Friday, off-peak pay as you go fares will be trialled all day on Fridays. The trial covers the Tube, DLR, London Overground, Elizabeth line and some National Rail services.

The discussion ran from 12 March 2024 - 31 May 2024

Many people work from home and more so on Fridays so off peak fares on a Friday won’t make any difference

If I have to travel  a distance then a later start can risk my late arrival.   I cannot afford black cabs on a regular basis!

I've been driving into central London 5 days a week for the past 25 years to be at my place of work before the underground starts running. When the trains run 24hrs I might consider using the tube network.

I was vaguely aware of the off peak initiative but completely unaware that we could use freedom psses before 09:00 on Fridays as part of the trial.

As I don't have to travel to work, my use of London' public transport is for leisure and pleasure purposes.  I would make use of travel prior to 09:00 if it was a possibility every day, but just Friday is simply too restrictive.  Of course, pre Covid, we could use Freedom Passes at any time of day.  I'm not sure why this situation hasn't been reinstated, especially as London is crying out for footfall.

People are not going to go by train because of the trains being delayed all the time or being cancelled you can't trust them they need to be sorted out and sort the crowed trains out and lower the prices for every day not just Fridays

As an Older Person’s Freedom Pass holder delighted that there will be a weekday when I can make an earlier start for exploring London and visiting it’s wonderful attractions. Let’s hope the trial is made permanent.

As far as I'm concerned, there was no prior information to the 'Metro' article I read last Friday morning, 8th March, well after 09:00, having based my travel decisions on the lack of knowledge about the new facility.  If I had known, I would most definitely, have taken advantage of this new freedom and done something more interesting than walk in a tight circle through certain parks in my borough, prior to shopping in my nearest shopping town, Enfield.

I'm already quite disgusted with my local bus services, consisting of just two bus routes that take me to different Piccadilly Line stations, neither of which can be trusted for reliability.  The only reliable transport is the Great Northern train service from Winchmore Hill, which I can check out before leaving home.  That is one main reason why I chose to walk from home on Friday, 8th March.

I mostly travel by bus. Very slowly getting back into using bike because the bus service is becoming unreliable. I work from home and travel to office once midweek (hint: not Friday). This trial is meaningless to me. I have yet to meet anyone where this trial has been helpful although there must be many where it will be. So far have come across one person who will be complaining - already! Perhaps if we had been consulted first you may have had a trial that would have had us all cheering because at the moment it's really not for us Londoners and feels like a campaign to win votes!👎

I would prefer the £24m cost to be used towards fixing Central Line trains and infrastructure, instead of as another piece of publicity seeking electioneering.

I welcome the initiative butt it is unlikely to change my own travel arrangements as the time and days I use public transport are almost always dictated by the event to which I am travelling.

my usual (& preferred) method of transport is bus so this doesnt impact on me specifically.

most commuters have travel passes so again this would not be of any benefit to them so unsure if this is just a gimmick aimed at  tourists.

I recommend that the Freedom Pass be usable during formerly peak hours. Not many of that FP age group travel at that hour anyway. When they do, it is usually for a necessary reason-doctor's appontment, etc. I don't think there are enogh FP holders to clog up peak hour any more significantly than it already is

Plus since most commuters have travelpasses anyway to keep their travel costs as low as possible, reducing fares on one day a week is of no benefit whatsoever.

Why not include buses?
