From 8 March to 31 May, off-peak pay as you go fares will be available all day on Fridays on Tube and Rail across London and parts of the Southeast.
Will cheaper fares on a Friday encourage you to ...
- use the Tube or Rail on a Friday, for work or leisure? Why or why not?
- swap your usual day(s) of travel to a Friday? Why or why not?
- use the Tube or Rail instead of other modes of transport? Why or why not?

Community Member 1 year agoGreat idea! It makes it far cheaper to get around, as I can't really afford to get the train to London during peak times normally (as freedom passes don't work then). I'm therefore more likely to travel.

Show full commentI think off peak Fridays are a great idea, but I'm worried that the trial is too short for the benefits to be seen. People take time to form new habits! There's a lot of good economic papers about this. I've just read one that says the changing a public transport fare takes 10 years to have the full effect (I hope TfL and the London Assembly are reading these as well). It found that the change in journey numbers after two years is only 1/3 of the change after 10 years. In other words, we'll be lucky to see any change at all from a 3 month trial – but that doesn't mean that off peak Fridays wouldn't work in the long run.

Community Member 1 year agoOff-peak fares have encouraged me to go in to the office more on a Friday but the off-peak rate is still quite high. I would expect it to be more like 50% of the peak fare?

Community Member 1 year agoI support off-peak Fridays as it makes sense especially with less people travelling to work on these Fridays, it helps others get out, especially in the evening to socialise after working.

Community Member 1 year agoThe off peak fares are a great idea! It means I can get the tube to work instead of use the bus that day, and save around £4 with my rail card on top.

Community Member 1 year agoCheaper fares in Friday will increase my use of travel by tube as I know that I will not be charged more for the activities I do on Friday. I will use rail travel more too because of this initiative

Community Member 1 year agoI live in Zone 1, so a typical trip is now 10p (< 4%) cheaper at certain times on Fridays - not any great inducement for me to rearrange travel plans.

Personally, cheaper travelcards would entice me to travel (much) more often. I know this isn't within the gift of the mayor as it requires the consent of the many train operators. But how about a travelcard that's only valid on TfL services - surely that only involves City Hall?

Community Member 1 year agoI fully support this! It’s a fun idea and makes travelling on Friday such a treat. I’m going to make use of the opentable deal as well. Would love to see this extended!

Community Member 1 year agoI'll stop buying a Travelcard and take advantage of the TfL fare freeze if it is made permanent.

Show full commentActually, this measure is academic as far as I am concerned since, as a Freedom Pass holder, I do not notice the price of fares. However, given that off peak fares are being introduced all day on Fridays until the date named, don't you think that the 9 am cut off date for the Freedom Pass should be dropped for this trial period ? Mind you, a better idea would be to drop this restriction altogether, at least for a trial period. Or is this idea too radical ? Mind you, I think that fares should be decreased all round (shock horror) ! Public transport in the UK is, infamously, one of the most expensive certainly in Europe.

I I prefer going in on a Friday because no one else is around. I get more done and can then meet up with friends rather than work
You need to advertise the cheap fare more. I did not know anything about it

Community Member 1 year agoIt’s great but bad marketing. They really should point out to people how much they will save per journey/month,year. I don’t believe people are aware how much cheaper it is to travel offpeak.
