Later this year, the Mayor will unveil a statue of suffragist leader Millicent Fawcett in Parliament Square. It will be the first ever monument of a woman on this site. It is designed by a woman too. The statue, by Turner-Prize winning artist Gillian Wearing OBE will also feature the portraits seen in this exhibition.

These women and men are key figures from the women’s suffrage movement. They include Emmeline Pankhurst and her daughters Christabel and Sylvia, as well as some far less familiar names. They are drawn from both suffragist and suffragette groups, representing the diversity of the women’s suffrage movement across the UK.

On display will also be a small scale model of the Millicent Fawcett statue that will be in Parliament Square – the first statue of a women in this space!
