Electric Vehicle Infrastructure
London’s Electric Vehicle charge point network is a global leader. At the start of 2020, there were almost 5,000 charge points – one for every six electric cars in the capital, and 25% of all points in the UK.
Rapid charge points
Rapid charge points are essential to support Londoners and businesses to make the switch from diesel to electric. They allow high mileage users, such as taxi drivers, freight and fleet operators, to quickly charge their electric vehicle.
Unlike standard charge points that can take 7-8 hours for a full charge, rapid charge points can charge an electric vehicle in 20-30 minutes.
A rapid charge point delivery programme is currently being led by Transport for London with support from the London boroughs. This will deliver 300 rapid charge points by the end of 2020, in addition to new networks being installed by the private sector. We also recently launched London’s first rapid charging hub in Stratford.
Charging points for residents
Alongside rapid charge points, the Mayor is working with London Councils to help London boroughs install slower standard charge points on residential streets, including retrofitting lamp columns. These will help Londoners who cannot charge an EV at their home.
We hope to see around 2,700 points installed by the end of 2020 as part of this programme. You can find more information here on how to ask your borough for a charge point near your home.
EV Infrastructure Taskforce
The Mayor’s EV Infrastructure Taskforce brought together representatives from business, energy, infrastructure, government and London boroughs.
Upon completion, the Taskforce published a Delivery Plan with recommendations around how, when and where to increase London's electric vehicle infrastructure up until 2025.

The London EV Charge Points Map is a simplified map of charge points across Greater London and up to the M25. The map shows:
- Your nearest public and taxi-only charge points
- Charging type
- Charge point operator
- Operating hours
