19 February 2015

The Mayor of London Boris Johnson is delighted to be supporting London's Chinese New Year celebrations, which take place in Trafalgar Square and Chinatown on Sunday 22 February and mark the start of the Year of the Sheep.

The annual event is one of the biggest Chinese New Year celebrations outside of Asia and large crowds are expected for a lively and colourful day out, with activities for all the family.

Trafalgar Square will host the traditional dotting the eyes ceremony, as well as the spectacular Flying Dragon and Lion Dance by the Chen Brothers. The stage show will include performers from the UK and China, including Cultures of China Festival of Spring, composer Ruth Chan, dancer Julia Cheng, the Red Poppy Ladies Percussion Group, as seen in 'Mulan the Musical', dancer Quang Kien Van, and DJ and producer Andy Leung.

There will be plenty to see and do in and around Chinatown, including a parade led by the Lucky Money God in Charing Cross Road, plus the opportunity to sample regional Chinese cooking at the plethora of restaurants in the area. London's Chinese New Year celebrations are organised by the London Chinatown Chinese Association (LCCA) and supported by the Mayor of London and Westminster City Council.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: 'London is one of the most exciting places in the world to celebrate Chinese New Year, hosting one of the biggest celebrations outside China. This year we are marking the Year of the Sheep, an animal said to symbolise peace and harmonious co-existence. In our diverse city, with people from every culture and background living side by side, such qualities make a huge difference in helping to promote a spirit of mutual respect and friendship. As Londoners we are proud to welcome Chinese New Year and celebrate the contribution that the Chinese community makes to the cultural and economic life of our city. 'Gong Xi Fa Cai. Kung Hei Fat Choy.'

Deputy Mayor for Policing Stephen Greenhalgh will take part in the opening ceremony and address the crowds from the main stage in Trafalgar Square.
