Tom Copley AM responds to Shelter's report

Responding to Shelter’s report showing an increase in the number of London’s renters at risk of eviction, Labour’s London Assembly Housing Spokesperson Tom Copley AM said:

“These figures are symptomatic of the insecurity we’ve seen in London’s housing market in recent years. Rents have rocketed, wages haven’t, and Londoners have been subjected to punitive welfare cuts. Anyone could have forecast this perfect storm.

“The previous Mayor badly let down renters in the capital. His rental standard scheme, which was supposed to protect tenants from bad landlords, was a flop. He didn’t build enough affordable homes. Home ownership became a distant dream for thousands of Londoners who found themselves trapped in an insecure private rented sector. Tackling the housing crisis he left behind will be no mean feat.”
