News from John Biggs (past staff): Mayor must “fully segregate Bow to Aldgate Cycle Superhighway”

Created on
23 October 2013

Local London Assembly Member John Biggs today put pressure on Mayor of London Boris Johnson to undertake to fully segregate the Cycle Superhighway 2. This call follows the recent inquest into the deaths of Brian Dorling at Bow Roundabout in 2011 and Philippine Marthe Anne Marie de Gerin-Ricard earlier this year at Aldgate.

John Biggs AM questioned Boris at today’s Mayor’s Question Time, raising the concerns voiced in the inquest by the coroner and police safety experts. The coroner’s Prevention of Death report, published yesterday, stated: “Cyclists wrongly assume (as Mr Dorling may have done) that they have priority, and are lulled into a false sense of security”.

Local London Assembly member, John Biggs said:

“I am pleased the Mayor has promised to review the concerns of the coroner and police safety experts about the false sense of security the Cycle SuperHighway 2 gives to cyclists. However, the Mayor’s unwillingness to fully segregate the entire CS2 from Aldgate to Bow Roundabout is misguided in the face of the tragedies we have witnessed on this route.

“The coroner was damning in her condemnation of the CS2 and the mixed messages it gives to cyclists and motorists. Boris must take this report seriously and take urgent measures to make the CS2 as safe for cyclists as possible, as soon as possible.”
