News from John Biggs (past staff): Bow roundabout was “accident waiting to happen”

Created on
16 October 2013

A coroner heard today how police safety experts had warned Transport for London prior to the tragic death of Brian Dorling in 2011 about the danger to cyclists at Bow Roundabout. The coroner called the cycle superhighway an “accident waiting to happen”.

Local London Assembly Member John Biggs has repeatedly criticised TfL over the failure to redesign Bow roundabout, making it safer for cyclists and pedestrians. He has met with TfL officials on a number of occasions to raise his concerns about the safety at Bow roundabout.

Local London Assembly member, John Biggs said:

“Whilst this doesn’t change the fact that two cyclists tragically lost their lives at Bow roundabout, the advance stopping lines and extra set of traffic lights introduced in the north east corner of Bow roundabout have vastly improved the safety of cyclists.

“I welcome the long overdue safety measures which are now underway for cyclists travelling from west to east as well but the roundabout will still not be safe until more changes are made - for example by introducing safe crossing facilities for pedestrians too. Tthis would help cyclists by extending the times when motor vehicles are not passing through the junction.”
