“Coming out of this crisis, we will need to reshape our capital and take the bold and meaningful action needed to prepare us for some of the major challenges that lie ahead.

“As part of these efforts, there is a responsibility on all of us to change the way we get around our communities and wider city, wherever possible.

“This is why it has been encouraging to see the Mayor and TfL get on with implementing the plans set out in their ambitious London Streetspace scheme, which will see our roads and town centres transformed to boost walking and cycling in the capital.

“For the sake of maintaining social distancing, easing pressures on public transport services and improving air quality, we must face the reality that we simply cannot revert to old habits of relying too heavily on using cars to make every day journeys.

“Since the lockdown began, the latest figures show that hourly average levels of harmful gas nitrogen dioxide NO2, at all monitoring sites in Central London, have dropped by a further 27%. With toxic air a contributing factor in the premature deaths of almost ten thousand Londoners per year, it is vital that we keep up this progress.

“It is likely that different areas of London will present their own challenges as the Streetspace scheme is being rolled out and I would encourage local people to get in touch with me if they have any questions or concerns about it”.
